How To Rename Multiple Objects At Once

Spread the love

When you add an object in Blender, it gets a generic name like Cube, Cube.001, and so on, depending on which shape you chose. You can rename it in the Outliner to be more meaningful. But what if you added tens of objects and only then realized that you forgot to rename them. It would be great if you could rename multiple objects at once. And the good news is you actually can.

In order to demonstrate how to rename multiple objects simultaneously, let’s create the objects first. You can just duplicate the default cube several times. Now you can see in the Outliner that they are called Cube (that’s the original one), Cube.001, Cube.002 and so on.

Suppose you don’t like these generic names. Instead you want to rename the objects box, box.001, box.002 and so on. If this change should apply to only some of the objects with names containing ‘Cube’, select them in the Outliner first. You don’t have to do it if it should apply to all of them.

Now you need the batch rename tool. It’s available in the Edit menu or you can use the Ctrl+F2 short key. Select Selected or All, depending on whether you want to rename just the selected or all objects respectively and choose one of the available options. In our case let’s use Find and Replace and type Cube in the upper edit box and box in the lower one. After hitting OK, the change will be applied.
